The Eagles won the Super Bowl, of course, and the Phillies captured the NL East title before falling out of the playoffs in excruciating fashion. These were the biggest stories for Philadelphia fans in 2025, but there was much more.
Dazzling rookie VJ Edgecombe brought new hope for the Sixers, while the downtrodden Flyers showed new fight under coach Rick Tocchet. The city’s iconic events, the Broad Street Run and the Philadelphia Marathon, were as thrilling as ever. The PGA Tour paid a visit this summer. And the NCAA wrestling championships brought a different vibe to the city.

The Flyers took the Carolina Hurricanes to a shootout last Saturday at Xfinity Mobile Arena, but lost 4-3. The Sixers, though, defended home court with a strong performance by Joel Embiid in last week’s 10-point win over the Indiana Pacers.
Meanwhile, Villanova picked up a much-needed nonconference win over Pittsburgh, buoyed by a strong performance from Duke Brennan.
And finally, our Alex Coffey spoke to Billy Gordon’s family, who still has his VHS collection of basketball games of nearly five decades in Cobbs Creek.

And it was an eventful one for our photographers and videographers who captured images that gave visual life to The Inquirer’s journalism and told stories in ways that transcend words. (For proof, see those racing hot dogs.)
They were on the scenes after two high-profile shootings that, combined, left five peopledead and18 others wounded, and for the march that poignantly drew attention to the tragic killing of Kada Scott.
In the months after the Eagles’ convincing Super Bowl victory, and the cheers in Chinatown when the 76ers decided they would rebuild in South Philly instead of moving, the region showed its resilience among challenges.
Dramatic decreases in homicides continued in Philly — 208 through Dec. 10, down from 527 through the same date in 2021. The city workers’ strike was over ineight days. The one in 1986 lasted three weeks.
SEPTA kept rolling despite fires, threatened drastic cuts, a possible strike, and serious railcar shortage.
Our visual staff was there for it all, and that won’t change in 2026.
