New Sixer Jaylen Brown is ‘going to push’ Joel Embiid, Mike Gansey says in local radio hit

Mike Gansey has had a busy start in Philadelphia. On June 8, the former general manager of the Cleveland Cavaliers was introduced as the 76ers’ new president of basketball operations.

In under a month, he helped orchestrate the trade that brought Jaylen Brown to Philadelphia from the Celtics in exchange for Paul George and draft picks.

On Thursday, Gansey appeared on Unfiltered with Ricky Bottalico and Bill Colarulo on 97.5 The Fanatic to discuss his tenure so far.

Bottalico and Colarulo wasted no time bringing up the details of the trade, which Gansey revealed “came out of nowhere a little bit.”

“We’re talking to Boston, and Jaylen [Brown], obviously he was out there in the media, and as every team does they make a call and see if he’s available and just kept talking to Boston for a couple weeks and didn’t know if anything would really happen,” Gansey said. “Next thing you know, they wanted to do a deal and that’s kind of how it happened.”

As trade talks progressed, it was clear George was going to play a key role in it, though Gansey said in his introductory presser that team were fully prepared to have the 36 year old as part of the team next season.

And most experts have agreed the Sixers got the better end of the deal, which Gansey said from the front-office’s perspective, they’re excited about.

“Obviously, we haven’t played a game yet so I don’t know what it’s going to look like but Jaylen’s been one of the top players in the league, one of the best two-way players. He’s coming off a career year,” Gansey said. “So when those guys come available, you at least try to make a call and try to get in there.”

Now, playing for what once was his rival team, Gansey said there’s still a little bit of confusion for Brown as he tries to adjust.

Among the adjustments Brown has to make is playing with Joel Embiid, who Brown publicly criticized for flopping on a Twitch stream following Game 7 of the Sixers-Celtics first-round series.

But since then, Gansey said he believes Brown has spoken to Sixers ownership and head coach Nick Nurse, and is excited to play with Embiid.

“He is like, ‘I am going to get in the gym with Joel here soon. I am going to push him. I am going to get him right,’” Gansey said. “He is going to bring some championship habits, attitude, and toughness to us that I know the city of Philly loves. It is like music to my ears listening to him and talking to him and he’s really fired up for the season to come up.”

Gansey said he also spoke to Embiid following the trade.

Entering into the offseason healthy, Gansey said Embiid is in a “really good space right now” as he begins to ramp up his training in the weight room ahead of the upcoming season.

“He’s excited. You know, surprised but excited as VJ [Edgecombe] and Tyrese [Maxey] and the rest of the group has been,” Gansey said. “It’s obviously going to be a big change but I think they’re welcoming it and they’re kind of excited to get the group together.”

The Sixers are still in the race to add another key to their roster, NBA superstar LeBron James. And Gansey said with a player like him, who he called “the greatest player to play the game,” moving at James’ pace is something teams are always going to be OK with.

“I’ve known LeBron for a long time, and have a ton of respect for him, and obviously I think he’d be a great fit for our group, and of course we’d love to have him, but you know he’s a basketball savant,” Gansey said. “I’m sure he’s taking this all in, and he’s super smart, and now he’s trying to figure it all out.”

And while he might still be adjusting to being a Sixer, that didn’t stop Brown from offering a few words to James on another livestream.

Appearing on a steam with influencer IShowSpeed during the France-Morocco World Cup Game, Brown encouraged James to “pull up to Philly.”

Even without landing James, Gansey said he already spoke to Nurse, whose “head is spinning in a positive way” as they figure out how to approach the season with all the star-power currently on the roster.

“We have an open roster spot, so we’re obviously looking at ways we can get better. Obviously, we’re holding that roster spot right now for someone,” Gansey said. “Depending on how that goes, we’re going to continue to look at ways to get better and improve our team.”

Philly traded one Brown for another: Jaylen Brown reveals he and former Eagle A.J. Brown are ‘cousins’

Think of a star player who was involved in a highly publicized trade between Philly and Boston.

If you’re thinking about a member of the Brown family, you’re correct.

Jaylen Brown, who was traded to the Sixers from the Boston Celtics in exchange for Paul George and draft picks last Wednesday, and A.J. Brown, who was traded from the Eagles to the New England Patriots for draft picks on June 1, have a lot more in common than their trade similarities and last name — or rather, their family name.

Jaylen revealed on Tuesday that the two are connected through their respective grandfathers who are brothers, making them second cousins.

“I didn’t know that, my grandpa just told me,” Jaylen said in the clip. “I don’t think [A.J.] knows that, either.”

But if A.J. didn’t know before, he does now. He responded on Instagram by posting a clip from the movie Poetic Justice on his story with the caption “Big Cuz hit me!”

While Jaylen grew up in Marietta, Ga., A.J. grew up in Starkville, Miss., about 300 miles away. But despite their different upbringings, there are still a few things that clearly run in the family, starting with their elite athleticism.

They also went back-to-back in winning their championships, with Jaylen winning an NBA championship in the 2023-24 season with the Celtics and A.J. following with a Super Bowl win in the 2024-25 season.

Fans also pointed out that the colors surrounding the teams involved in each trade is similar with both Jaylen and A.J. originally wearing green and white before going to a team with a red, white, and blue colorway.

Jaylen shared the details of the Brown family tree during an event at Massachusetts Institute of Technology for his 7uice Foundation, which focuses on bridging the gap for opportunities for underserved youth.

During the same event, Jaylen met with a young Celtics fan who went viral for his reaction following his trade to Philly.

Known on social media as “Gio the Tiger,” the young fan went viral after video showed him crying over the trade with his Celtics jersey on and what read “Filla” written over the Boston team’s name. The text on the video said that the 6-year-old was experiencing his “first heartbreak” after learning the news of his favorite player’s trade.

After Jaylen commented on the original post reminding Gio they’d “always be friends,” the duo connected in person where he was also able to deliver a hand-written note to Jaylen and interview him as well.

Five things that have kept the Sixers in the LeBron James sweepstakes

The 76ers are reportedly among LeBron James’ top three preferred free-agency destinations as teams continue to court him deep into the summer. The other options are the Cleveland Cavaliers and Miami Heat, according to ESPN’s Shams Charania.

Meanwhile, ESPN’s Brian Windhorst, who has deep Ohio ties, said the pendulum appears to be swinging toward the Cavaliers, but the Sixers and several other NBA franchises are not counting themselves out.

How do the Sixers stack up as a LeBron James destination? Breaking down his reported top 3 contenders.

So you’re telling the Sixers there’s still a chance? They’ve been here before, vying for James’ services most recently in 2018 as he considered teaming up with a young Joel Embiid and Ben Simmons. Now the Sixers once again have an attractive roster centered around Embiid, Tyrese Maxey, Jaylen Brown and VJ Edgecombe.

It could be a while before we learn James’ final decision, but here are five things that make the Sixers attractive to the 41-year old.

LeBron’s quest for a new challenge

James has done all there is to accomplish in basketball. He has four NBA titles, 10 Finals appearances and he owned the Eastern Conference for a decade. And there’s even lore surrounding those titles, as he brought one championship to his home state and resurrected franchises in Miami and Los Angeles.

He holds the NBA’s all-time record for scoring, minutes played, games played, and more. All-time greats in sports are constantly looking for new challenges, and James is running out of options. So if he’s looking for a place to retire, the Cavaliers hold the sentimental edge and Florida is the retirement capital of the country. But only the Sixers offer new territory.

The Jaylen Brown trade

Prior to the Brown trade, folks in Philly saw James’ departure from the Lakers on the news ticker and kept moving along. The addition of Brown created a potential starting lineup of Maxey, Edgecombe, Brown and Embiid. And while Dean Wade was a great free-agency addition, James could look at that lineup and slot himself in at power forward and see a real title contender. That’s the moment “everything changed” for the Sixers’ chances of landing James, according to James’ agent and Klutch Sports owner Rich Paul.

The Eastern Conference has also presented a level of parity that could benefit the Sixers. While the East has won two of the last three titles, no team has made a repeat Finals appearance since James’ Cavaliers made it four straight times. Brown’s Celtics made the Finals in 2022 and won in 2024 and he knows how to get back. Famously, the Sixers haven’t made it past the second round since 2001, but it’s a notch in their belt to have someone who understands that process.

Tyrese Maxey’s Klutch ties and infectious personality

Maxey’s rise continues. Originally selected with the 21st pick out of Kentucky in 2020, Maxey had to wait his turn for the Sixers. He played behind Simmons and competed with Shake Milton for minutes. But once given a full-time role, Maxey’s star took off. He became a starter, then an All-Star and then an All-NBA performer. Now, Maxey is one of the pillars of the Sixers’ pitch to James after averaging 28.3 points, 4.1 rebounds and 6.6 assists and leading the Sixers to the postseason.

There’s also the personality piece, because Maxey’s infectious persona and work ethic have been lauded by everyone in the Sixers’ organization. And, of course, as Klutch Sports clients with deep ties to Paul, James is familiar with both sides of Maxey. And Paul has repeatedly said that James “loves” Maxey.

The greatness of peak Joel Embiid

That it took this long to get to Embiid should say something about the state of things. Embiid played only 38 games last season and called that a success because he learned more about managing his knee that could benefit the Sixers going forward. Of course, it was to some extent because he played only 19 games the year before because of knee surgery. And when available, Embiid was exceptional in 2025-26, including a stretch where he looked like his old MVP self. He averaged 26.9 points on 48.9% shooting, 7.7 rebounds, 3.9 assists, and 1.2 blocks in 38 games.

Then, when he appeared primed for a healthy postseason, Embiid was diagnosed with appendicitis and missed multiple games in the Sixers’ first-round series against the Boston Celtics. But then he showed flashes once again, powering the Sixers to a series win after they went down three games to one. He averaged 28 points, 9 rebounds and 7 assists in four games and the Sixers were 3-1 in games he played. And then he was drained as the Sixers were swept by the eventual champion New York Knicks. The highs and lows with Embiid are stark, but the highs are great enough that even a player like James could hold out hope.

Competence in the front office

Previous iterations of the Sixers tried to land James, but they weren’t always taken seriously. They had talent with Simmons and Embiid in 2018, but weren’t stout up top as Brett Brown served as interim president of basketball operations and head coach. Former president of basketball operations Daryl Morey took big swings in recent years but saw trades for Paul George and James Harden fail to lift the team.

Things appear to have taken a turn this summer. Mike Gansey, Bob Myers and Jameer Nelson are at the helm and appear to be building a team that will compete in the Eastern Conference. Moves to bring in Brown, Wade, Ariel Hukporti, Anfernee Simons and rookie Labaron Philon Jr., have started to add balance to the Sixers roster and are a good sign for the forthcoming Sixers season. And there’s still a chance one big name could be added to the bunch.

Brad Stevens says he would rather have not traded Jaylen Brown to Philly, but the Celtics did what they had to do

It wasn’t the first time Brad Stevens had heard the question. His story piques a natural curiosity. A man widely regarded as one of the world’s finest basketball coaches walked away from one of the world’s finest basketball coaching jobs at 44 years old. He did so to become a suit. Over the last five years, plenty of people have wondered aloud to the Celtics’ president of basketball operations.

So, do you miss coaching?

“I did this week,” Stevens said on Monday, recounting a conversation he had with an interrogator last week. “This is not for the faint of heart.”

The Sixers just turned Paul George into Jaylen Brown and transformed themselves for an unbelievable price

Stevens’ news conference alongside Celtics majority owner Bill Chisholm earlier this week offered the world its first chance to inform its opinion on a trade that stunned the NBA like few before it. While the Sixers have yet to announce when they will field questions about their blockbuster acquisition of Boston superstar Jaylen Brown, the guys on the other side of the deal didn’t have the same luxury.

Rarely does an NBA team encounter such a universal and vociferous disagreement with a trade as the Celtics did to their decision to trade Brown to the Sixers for Paul George and a couple of first- and second- round picks. Here in Philly, the jubilation surrounding such a no-brainer decision was further enhanced by the opportunity to watch Bostonians engage in a collective public meltdown unlike any it has staged since at least the Revolutionary War. One local radio host called it the worst trade in Celtics history. Another said he felt physically ill. Bill Simmons said he woke up from a colonoscopy and assumed he’d died.

“I’m with you,” Stevens said. “That is a hard thing to trade a guy that you, first of all, care so much about and secondly have so much respect and admiration for, to a team that just beat you in the playoffs and that you’re literally going to play six times before the playoffs next year, with our two preseason games. But I do think that ultimately when you do a deal you need to think about you first and the optionality it creates for you. If I’m being honest, if that exact deal came from a team out west and you were comparing the two, then you’d probably take the team out west. But that’s not the way it was working.”

Whatever the immediate local reaction to Stevens’ defense of the decision, he and Chisholm offered a master class in how to handle blowback. You do it directly, immediately, and humbly. It helps when you believe in your decision-making process, which the Celtics clearly did. And, look, they were right to feel that way. Because, chances are, this ends up being a good decision for them.

That’s not the same as saying that the Sixers will regret their decision to trade for Brown. Nor is it the same as saying that the Celtics “won” the deal. None of those things are exclusive from one another. There is a scenario where the Celtics and Sixers both did what was best for them, and that the price was perfectly fair. Granted, things rarely align on all three of those fronts. But this is one of those deals where both sides made the most rational decision and where the market dictated the terms. A lot of the criticism currently being aimed at the Celtics would be better targeted at the 28 general managers who either couldn’t or wouldn’t beat the Sixers’ offer for Brown. If anything, the market was the irrational actor.

From the Sixers’ perspective, the argument remains largely as it did in the immediate wake of the deal. More than practically any other player in the NBA, Brown at least renders believable the idea that the Sixers can contend for a championship over the next two years, given both their smallish backcourt of Tyrese Maxey and VJ Edgecombe and their preexisting financial condition. Brown’s size, athleticism, explosiveness and shotmaking are a much better fit at about $60 million over three years than George was for essentially the same AAV over two years. That, at the very least, means the Sixers will be doing something other than treading water and praying for a miracle for the duration of Joel Embiid’s contract, which is as immovable — and limiting — as any in the NBA.

The Celtics were not bound by those constraints. Their desire to remain that way sits at the heart of the decision to trade Brown. Keeping his contract on their books could easily have led them to a fiscal and competitive cliff. A lot of the criticism of the Celtics seems to underestimate this reality.

The criticism doesn’t account for the idea that Payton Pritchard is worth the entire amount of the four-year, $100 million extension he is eligible to sign. Over the last two seasons, seven guards in the NBA have a .600-plus true shooting percentage while attempting at least 20 shots per 100 possessions. Those seven are Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, Austin Reaves, Jamal Murray, Anthony Edwards, Luka Dončić, Desmond Bane, and … Pritchard.

The criticism doesn’t account for the contract that former second-round pick Jordan Walsh could command as a free agent next summer. It doesn’t account for Hugo González potentially hitting his option year at the same time Pritchard’s current deal is expiring. The Celtics could have made it work for the next couple of years, sure. But they wouldn’t be able to do it the two years after that. The teams that lose sight of those years are the ones who end up where the Sixers were.

The criticism of the Celtics also seems to under-assess the Celtics’ return. The 2028 draft pick they acquired is hugely valuable given the probability that it ends up as a maximum-odds lottery pick and the time-value aspect of its relative immediacy. The 2031 unprotected pick will be perfectly timed on a number of levels.

I don’t have room to show you all of the work. But you should at least be able to accept that a basketball mind as astute as Stevens’ and an organization as accomplished as the Celtics have done the work. In a weird way, all of the factors that have generated such outrage are also evidence of how strongly the Celtics believed in their decision.

Few teams have the stones to trade a player at the peak of his value. The Celtics’ skids were greased by Brown’s eligibility for a contract extension. More often than not, the word “No” is a first domino.

“They convinced me this was the best way for us to win, and I got there, I did, but it was hard,” Chisholm said. “It was really hard. And I recognize this is a big, big move.”

It is unquestionably a move that works in the Sixers’ favor. But that doesn’t mean it won’t work out for the Celtics, too.

The Philadelphia 76ers have had a busy offseason so far — adding two players who were with the Boston Celtics last season. They acquired Jaylen Brown in a blockbuster trade in exchange for Paul George and signed Anfernee Simons to a two-year, $12.3 million deal.

That got us thinking: how many players have suited up for both the Sixers and their Atlantic Division rivals in green?

The Jaylen Brown trade benefits VJ Edgecombe, who will now have the time he needs to develop

Jaylen Brown loves attention, which is why he went on Twitch to talk about his feelings just hours after releasing a statement on social media expressing his feelings about being traded from the Celtics to the Sixers for a PED cheat and four speculative draft picks.

While Twitch-ing, or whatever it’s called, Brown got a phone call from the coworker who probably is happiest to have him aboard: VJ Edgecombe.

It was just 30 seconds of Gen Z acknowledgment and ego stroking, but there was a real vibe of Thank God you’re on my team so now I don’t have to play every minute of every game.

Later, on that Twitch stream, Brown announced:

“‘The Process is back f— on.”

Not really.

Call it Process 2.0, and understand that Edgecombe, properly nurtured, will be as important to its success as anyone.

That nurturing process got a lot smoother when the Celtics gave Brown away on Wednesday.

It could get even smoother if King James arrives.

On Thursday, LeBron James’ camp let it be known that he would consider playing next season in Philadelphia now that Brown has joined Joel Embiid, Tyrese Maxey, and Edgecombe. The King, now 41, is hunting a fifth NBA title, and Philly has become a viable contender within the last few days, even though the Sixers currently can pay him only the veteran minimum, just under $4 million. This would be a $48 million pay cut from last season with the Lakers.

Don’t hold your breath.

As insane as landing LeBron would be, shedding a bad contract and landing a superstar is even nuttier. And fishier.

Something is amiss when the smartest organization in basketball gives away a top-10 player and asks in return for a broken-down PED cheater and two first-round picks that probably aren’t going to be that good anyway.

At any rate, the Celtics on Wednesday traded Brown, a five-time All-Star, who is 29, to the Sixers for Paul George, who is 36, and who has had just one good season since he was 29. The Sixers also sent first-round picks in 2028 and 2031 and two second-round picks to Boston. The most significant aspect of the deal is that it erased the worst contract in the history of the franchise; George has two more seasons left on a four-year, $211 million deal, and he hasn’t been worth one-tenth of it.

The move also made the Sixers an immediate NBA title contender, since Brown is everything the Sixers wanted George to be: a shot-creating athlete at all three levels who can play and defend multiple positions.

The deal also delivers an invaluable byproduct.

It gives Edgecombe time.

Time to develop.

Time to learn.

Time to rest.

Edgecombe not only led rookies at 35 minutes per game, he ranked 11th in the entire league and averaged the eighth-most minutes for a rookie guard in the last 17 seasons. As the Sixers dealt with injury absences of Joel Embiid as well as the early load-management strategies and the late PED suspension of George, Edgecombe proved himself too good to not protect.

“VJ is going to be a lot better in the long run with J.B. around,” said an NBA source who is intimately familiar with the 76ers. “At the end of last season, he was pretty worn out.”

Outside of a diminished three-point shooting percentage, the wear and tear didn’t really show up in his other raw stats. They dipped in the playoffs, but then, Embiid and George were back on the court for much of the late season and postseason. But his decision-making became errant, his shot selection more questionable, and he tended to disappear. He needed help that his big-money vets were not there to provide.

The absence of Paul George (8) had a trickle-down effect at times on VJ Edgecombe.

Combined, they missed 89 of 164 games, more than half. This has been the norm for both of them for the past few seasons.

Brown plays about 20 more games a season than Embiid and George.

That means that when Embiid misses his 30 or 35 games this season, Brown will be there to carry the load, whereas George was not.

That also means that when Embiid plays, Edgecombe will not have to serve as the second or third offensive option, using moves he shouldn’t be making and taking shots he shouldn’t be taking for at least another season or two. When the Sixers drafted him third overall, most projections cast him as a superior athlete with unlimited defensive potential but with limited plug-and-play offensive ability. He learned fast, averaged 16 points per game, and made the All-Rookie team, but, man, there were some ugly nights and some ugly shots.

Brown will also help Maxey get off his feet a little more. Maxey led the NBA at 38.0 minutes per game in an MVP-caliber season, but he wore down, too. Both were affected by the early injury absence of Jared McCain, and then by McCain’s exit at the trade deadline, as well as the lack of consistent contributions from guard Quentin Grimes.

Edgecombe and Brown don’t play the same position, exactly, but they will combine with Maxey, and possibly rookie Labaron Philon Jr., to manage the primary backcourt duties.

Brown will arrive motivated to make the best impression possible.

He’s in line for a two-year, $140 million extension that will put him under contract for the next five seasons. He will be a more focused defender and rebounder, play-make with more alacrity, and, inevitably, he will assume the role of mentor to Edgecombe that George served last year.

He said in Thursday‘s social media post that he was “Excited and disappointed at the same time” to be leaving Boston, where he won a title, and coming to the Sixers, who bounced him from the playoffs this spring.

It was delivered with Brown’s typical class and polish.

The Twitch stuff? Less classy, less polished, but just as real.

The Celtics, meanwhile, immediately started planting narratives about how zero-time All-Star guard Derrick White is a more valuable player than Brown. ESPN insider Brian Windhorst also reported that the Celtics, after consulting their analytics, considered it imperative to get backup center Mitchell Robinson off the court when they played the Knicks. Then, on Wednesday, they signed Robinson to a three-year, $47.4 million deal.

No wonder the Sixers knocked them out in the first round.

There is always the possibility that this trade is not as lopsided as it seems. The Celtics certainly didn’t see the value in retaining a guy who can make more than $320 million if he’s offered an extension.

The pocket protector crowd loves to cite and manipulate undependable metrics that diminish Brown’s obvious talent, skill, value, and performance. They insist that his playmaking fluctuates, his defense is overrated, and his shot diet doesn’t regularly generate the most efficient looks for him or his teammates.

Remember, analytics is an industry, and it has to feed itself and convince its consumers of its necessity.

Therein lies an irony. As much as analytics have torpedoed the Sixers’ plans, execution, and hopes over the past 14 years of “The Process,” it appears that analytics now have delivered an unexpected reward — in the form of Jaylen Brown.

The newest 76er finally spoke about the deal that sent him from the Boston Celtics to the Sixers in exchange for Paul George, two first-round picks, and two second-round picks.

Known for his social media presence in recent years, Brown took to his stream to read his statement, speak directly to fans, and explain a few behind-the-scenes details.

“Guys hitting me so we ready to get to work,” Brown said after a brief call with Edgecombe.

Maxey spoke to Brown with his typical high energy and enthusiasm. He grew more excited when he learned that he was live on stream, greeting the chat and proclaiming that he would pull up for a later recording. They ended the call talking basketball.

“You know I’m locked in, man. Holla at me. I’m in the gym whenever,” Maxey said.

“Aight, bet, we gone get in the gym,” Brown said.

Brown’s key card no longer works in Boston

Brown has played for one franchise for the last 10 years, so this experience is all new to him. So new that he wanted to make sure the trade was real after reports surfaced that he was dealt to Philly.

Brown revealed that he drove to the Celtics’ facility and tried to use his key card. It did not work.

“I went up to the facility, and my key card got rejected,” Brown said. “Damn, I just wanted to see if it was real. They packed me up, bro.”

Brown’s experience has been compared to a viral video of former NFL safety Jamal Adams, whose key card didn’t work at the Jets facility after he was traded to the Seattle Seahawks.

Joining the Sixers will be an adjustment

The rivalry between Boston and Philly is real, and the hatred goes both ways.

Brown said it will be an adjustment joining a rival of his former team. He admitted that the Celtics programmed him to dislike Philly.

“For the last 10 years, I’ve been programmed to hate Philadelphia, from the history of the rivalry to the playoff battles, The Process,” Brown said, “like I’ve been programmed to be like [expletive] The Process. It’s funny now, I gotta reverse engineer.”

Brown is not a fan of the media’s portrayal of him

The Brown trade rumors unearthed the underbelly of narratives and projections about Brown’s play and revealed how harmful labels can be attached to a player.

Brown addressed a number of media members he believes have slighted him, calling out ESPN personality Stephen A. Smith, Fox broadcaster Colin Cowherd, and ESPN front office insider Bobby Marks by name.

Marks shared on SiriusXM NBA Radio that an anonymous source told him they believed Brown was the “seventh-best player on a team,” which didn’t make the most sense after Brown willed Boston to the postseason last year and won an NBA title only two years ago.

“They use ‘anonymous sources’ to hide behind things they actually feel, or to hide behind things that are actually bigotry,” Brown said, referring to talk that he thinks he is the smartest person in the room. “‘It’s not me, it’s my anonymous source’ but they don’t see the amount of damage that can do. … It’s my character. Critique my performance all you want, but the line gets crossed.”

Paul George was a flashy free-agent signing two years ago. His choppy Sixers stint led to another blockbuster trade

During a post-practice media session two days before Game 1 of the 76ers’ first-round playoff series against the Boston Celtics, Paul George was asked extensively about defending the wing tandem of Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown.

“Those two guys have won,” George said. “They’re mature. They’re experienced. … If we’ve got a shot to beat them, we’ve got to make it as tough as possible.”

The veteran wing was instrumental on both ends of the floor in that stunning Sixers upset. Brown said as much on a Thursday night Twitch livestream, calling George’s performance “vintage” during that series. And more division-rival matchups between George and Brown are on the horizon — but in opposite jerseys.

George’s two-year stopover in Philly is over, after the Sixers on Wednesday agreed to trade him and four draft picks to Boston in a blockbuster exchange for the All-NBA wing Brown. George, once a perennial All-Star but now past his prime, will be remembered as the flashy free-agent signing in 2024 whose tenure here was regularly interrupted by injuries and suspension.

Much hoopla surrounded George’s arrival, including stories of the Sixers’ brass dodging a storm on their flight to Los Angeles to woo him into agreeing to a four-year max contract after 2 a.m. Eastern time the first night of free agency. The Sixers deliberately cleared cap space — including asking ascending star point guard Tyrese Maxey to wait a year to sign his own max deal — in order to offer such a contract once Tobias Harris’ deal came off the books.

George revealed he had formed a “secret friendship” with fellow introvert Joel Embiid at league events such as All-Star weekend, adding context to Embiid’s nationally televised side-eye to George while on set together at the NBA Finals. Coach Nick Nurse expressed excitement in the clean “1-3-5” fit with Maxey at guard, George on the wing, and 2023 NBA Most Valuable Player Embiid at center.

Yet it was foreshadowing when George, who turned 36 in May, hyperextended his knee in a preseason game at the Atlanta Hawks in 2024. He went on to play 78 total games across two seasons with the Sixers, and only 36 with both Embiid and Maxey that yielded an 18-18 record.

At various points during that frustrating first season in Philly, George received painkiller injections in his pinkie finger, adductor, and knee to try and play. He visibly did not have the same burst to get past defenders which had previously helped make him one of the smoothest and versatile scorers of this generation. He sustained another knee injury during an offseason workout last July, prompting arthroscopic surgery and another delayed start to his 2025-26 season.

Then in January, George was abruptly suspended by the NBA for 25 games for violating the league’s anti-drug policy.

Interestingly, those weeks away may have helped George’s body heal and propelled him to a strong finish. He averaged 21 points, 5.7 rebounds, 3.3 assists, and 2.2 steals in the Sixers’ final 10 regular-season games, and shot a blistering 41.5% on 8.2 three-point attempts per game.

In that first-round series against the Celtics, George drew praise from Nurse and teammates for his stout play while the three-star Embiid-Maxey-George vision suddenly came to life. George added that he was finally “able to do things [on the court] that I was once able to do, again.” But during the New York Knicks’ second-round sweep of the Sixers, George started multiple games strong before his production fell off in the second half.

George, though, expressed optimism during his end-of-season news conference that he could have a “real summer of improving” his game instead of rehabbing an injury. The Sixers made a significant front-office change in replacing Daryl Morey with new president of basketball operations Mike Gansey, but it appeared they would be forced to run it back with their core because of the hefty salary committed across multiple seasons.

Perhaps Wednesday’s shocking trade is evidence that no contract is immovable.

News surfaced publicly that the Celtics had offered Brown to the Milwaukee Bucks as part of a trade package for two-time MVP Giannis Antetokounmpo before last week’s NBA draft. From the outside, it appears that, in the aftermath, the relationship between team and player became irreparable. And though the Sixers swapped one gigantic contract for another in the deal, Brown is more durable, in his prime, and coming off a season when he finished sixth in MVP voting.

George also is an example of the modern NBA’s more transient stars. This will be his fifth team — also including the Indiana Pacers, Oklahoma City Thunder, and Los Angeles Clippers — in a fantastic 17-year career. Before this stunning blockbuster, George had already been traded for future two-time MVP Shai Gilgeous-Alexander along with former All-Stars Victor Oladipo and Domantas Sabonis.

George also might become the last mega free agent for the foreseeable future — other than LeBron James’ wildly unique situation this summer — who simply joins a new team on a max contract.

There has been a barrage of star-player moves already this offseason, including the Toronto Raptors reacquiring Kawhi Leonard, LaMelo Ball going from the Charlotte Hornets to the Minnesota Timberwolves, and Ja Morant moving from the Memphis Grizzlies to the Portland Trail Blazers. All of those have occurred via trade. That can be attributed to the new collective bargaining agreement and “apron penalties,” along with an overarching player philosophy to get lucrative contracts when offered as extensions by their current team and, if necessary, force their way to a new playing destination later.

The prospect of James coming Philadelphia was already picking up steam on social media following the Brown trade. Then, Steven Gansey, the younger brother of new Sixers president of basketball operations Mike Gansey, added fuel to the fire.

As the photo shows, Gansey and James have crossed paths. The two Ohio natives competed in high school. Gansey, who went to have a memorable collegiate career at West Virginia, finished as the runner-up to James in the 2001 Mr. Ohio Basketball race.

Would Gansey make another splashy move?

Over a decade after facing LeBron on the court, Gansey served in a variety of roles in Cleveland during James’ second stint with the Cavaliers. In 2016, when James willed the team to a 3-1 comeback over the Golden State Warriors in the NBA Finals, Gansey received a ring as the team’s director of development league operations.

Signing James would also be in line with the Sixers president’s resume. Gansey has previously shown that he is not scared of making splashy moves — and bringing in one of the NBA’s all-time greats is a cannonball.

As the Cavaliers general manager, Gansey was part of a front office that traded for stars Donovan Mitchell and James Harden. Now, during his first offseason leading the Sixers, he executed a trade for Brown — another top-tier player. So it wouldn’t appear Gansey is too risk-adverse to add another star to the roster.

Are the Sixers actually in the mix?

On Wednesday, Rich Paul, James’ agent and longtime friend, told Game Over podcast host Max Kellerman that between 12 and 14 teams have reached out about his client. With the Sixers appearing to be all-in this season, it would make sense that the team has interest.

And on Thursday, ESPN’s Shams Charania reported that the Sixers are “trying to make a pitch” to James.

Shortly after, ESPN’s Brian Windhorst also linked James to the Sixers, pointing to Tyrese Maxey’s connection through Paul and Klutch Sports.

“A key factor in any sort of Philadelphia pursuit of LeBron is Tyrese Maxey. That is not only because of his talent, which is awesome, but he’s one of Klutch’s core clients,” Windhorst said. “He’s basically a part of LeBron’s extended family, so you would not only have Jaylen Brown as the addition, you would have Tyrese Maxey as your drawing card.”

James has also been linked to the Heat, the Cavaliers, and the Warriors since becoming a free agent.

How would LeBron fit with the Sixers?

James’ time-proven versatility makes him a good fit on most NBA rosters, and the Sixers are no exception.

James could easily slide into the four-spot over presumptive starter Dean Wade, a free-agent acquisition from Cleveland. Even if Joel Embiid is banged up during the regular season, the Sixers have two high volume scorers to take the load off James in Brown and Maxey. Last season, Brown and Maxey finished fourth and fifth in points per game, respectively.

The 41-year-old future Hall of Famer is more than willing to take the backseat in the twilight of his career. Last year, Lakers guard Luke Dončić led the league in points per game as James served as the team’s secondary ballhandler. James averaged 20.9 points, 6.1 rebounds, and 7.2 assists in 60 games last season. With the Sixers, he would be asked to do even less.

Could the Sixers even afford him?

James is not looking for a big payday, which is welcome news for the cash-strapped Sixers.

ESPN reported that the four-time MVP is willing to sign a minimum contract. This report coincides with comments from Paul, who previously explained the 41-year old’s decision will be motivated by achieving “complete happiness” — not money.

The Sixers, after signing former New York Knicks center Ariel Hukporti on Wednesday and guard Anfernee Simons on Thursday, are now over the luxury tax and $3.2 million under the first apron, where they are hard-capped. They are now limited to veteran minimum contracts, meaning they could sign James if he is willing to play on a low-cost deal.

Have the Sixers ever been close before?

The last time James was seeking a new team, as a free-agent in 2018, he gave Philadelphia a look.

Although many considered James to Los Angeles to be a done deal at the time, he did consider joining the Sixers. In an interview with ESPN’s Rachel Nichols after signing with the Lakers, James mentioned that he chose the Lakers over the likes of the Sixers and the Houston Rockets — two teams that boasted more talent than LA at the time — to help cement his legacy as a great.

“I definitely thought long and hard about the possibilities of lining up alongside Ben [Simmons] and [Joel] Embiid, or lining up alongside [James] Harden and Chris [Paul],” James told ESPN in 2018. “I felt like at this point in my career, the ultimate for me — just like when I went to Miami, everyone kind of looks at me joining a super team.”

“I like the challenge of being able to help a team get to some places they haven’t been in a while, and obviously the Lakers haven’t made the playoffs in a few years,” he added.

Representatives from Philadelphia met with James’ camp but James did not attend the meeting. The meeting was led by then-Sixers head coach Brett Brown, who was also serving as the team’s interim president following the resignation of Bryan Colangelo.

Leading up to that free agency, Philadelphia made an all-out push for James with Embiid taking to social media to pitch his team to James. The then-24-year-old center made a plea on Twitter (now X), and even took a shot at Colangelo by referencing a now infamous line he used on one of the burner accounts that led to his exit.

Meanwhile, Philadelphia-based company Power Home Remodeling purchased three billboards outside of Cleveland to court James, who played for the Cavaliers at the time. Two of the billboards read “Philly Wants LeBron” and “Complete The Process” — referring to the Sixers’ motto spearheaded by former president Sam Hinkie. The third billboard featured LeBron’s number on the court alongside the numbers of the Sixers’ starting lineup.

The rumor mill around James joining the Sixers mainly revolved around his well-known relationship with Simmons, who was known to workout with James on occasion. Both former first overall picks, the two (like Maxey and James) shared an agency in Klutch Sports. Coming out of the draft and early in his career, Simmons, a 6-foot-10 point guard, also received a hefty comparison to James because of his playmaking ability and size.

As fate would have it, Simmons recently displayed interest in returning to Philadelphia in an interview with Men’s Health.

Anfernee Simons has agreed to sign a two-year, $12.3 million contract with the 76ers, a source confirmed to The Inquirer on Thursday afternoon.

After trading for star Jaylen Brown on Wednesday night, the Sixers turned to some much-needed bench bolstering after losing sixth man Quentin Grimes, who reportedly will sign with the Los Angeles Lakers.

Simons has averaged a career 14.9 points and shot 38.1% on 6.6 three-pointers per game during his eight-year career with the Portland Trail Blazers, Boston Celtics, and Chicago Bulls.

Simons also was one of Brown’s teammates with the Celtics last season. Simons averaged 14.2 points, 2.4 rebounds, and 2.4 assists in 49 games before being traded to Chicago for reserve center Nikola Vučević on Feb. 5.

To sign Simons and stay under the first apron, where they are hard capped, his contract will come out of the nontaxpayer midlevel exception. Ariel Hukporti’s one-year, $3.4 million deal, which was agreed to Wednesday, will come out of the $5.5 biannual exception.

Simons joins a Sixers guard group that already features All-NBA third-teamer Tyrese Maxey and VJ Egdecombe, who finished third in voting for NBA Rookie of the Year. Simons’ addition could cut into the initial playing time for rookie-to-be Labaron Philon Jr., who was the 22nd overall pick in the draft.

The Sixers’ roster currently sits at 14 players. Reserve center Adem Bona’s contract becomes guaranteed on Tuesday, while Dalen Terry’s nonguaranteed deal and Jabari Walker’s partially guaranteed deals become guaranteed Jan. 10.

This is another step in the Sixers going all in to become a legitimate Eastern Conference threat.

They finished last season seventh in the East standings (45-37) and, after their stunning rally from down three games to one to upset the Celtics, were swept by the eventual NBA champion New York Knicks. In addition to the Sixers’ blockbuster trade for Brown, the Toronto Raptors reacquired former star Kawhi Leonard and the Miami Heat traded for two-time NBA MVP Giannis Antetokounmpo.
