    Philadelphia could be in for another banner year at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame with the city’s biggest pop star, Pink, among the 17 nominees in the running to be inducted later this year.

    Along with the Doylestown-born “Get the Party Started” singer, the list of potential inductees includes another artist with Philly ties in Lauryn Hill. Plus, Phil Collins, Wu-Tang Clan, Oasis, Mariah Carey, Jeff Buckley, Billy Idol, the Black Crowes, INXS, Shakira, Iron Maiden, Luther Vandross, Sade, Melissa Etheridge, Joy Division / New Order, Iron Maiden, and New Edition.

    Pink — who was born Alecia Moore and has graduated to stadium-sized stardom, with recent tour dates at Lincoln Financial Field and Citizens Bank Park — is newly eligible for the Rock Hall this year, having released her debut album, Can’t Take Me Home, in 2000.

    Ten of the artists on the list have been nominated for the first time. Pink is the only one who made the initial cut in her first year of eligibility.

    Last year was a breakthrough year for Philly at the RRHOF. “The Twist” hitmaker Chubby Checker was finally inducted — although he didn’t attend the ceremony due to a scheduling conflict. Late songwriter-producer Thom Bell got in as a Musical Excellence honoree. Cyndi Lauper, who has deep Philly ties, also got in.

    Artists hoping to be named when inductees are announced in April include Hill, the Fugees singer whose acclaimed one-and-only-studio album as a solo artist, 1998’s The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill, came out via Conshohocken’s Ruffhouse Records label.

    Other nominees Philly music fans have a rooting interest in are Luther Vandross, the luxuriously voiced New York R&B singer who founded a Patti LaBelle fan club in high school and was a key contributor to David Bowie’s 1975 album Young Americans, which was recorded at Sigma Sound Studios. And Staten Island’s hip-hop Wu-Tang Clan have always claimed Philly as their second biggest market, and chose to end the farewell tour in South Philly last summer.

    This year’s list is sure to irritate rock and roll purists eager to point out that the majority of acts nominated don’t primarily make rock and roll music. Instead, the list includes Shakira’s Latin pop, New Edition’s 1990s R&B, Carey’s R&B and hip-hop pop, and Sade’s silky smooth jazz-inflected R&B.

    But that ship has long since sailed. With most rock and roll originators enshrined years ago, the modern RRHOF would more properly be called the Pop Music Hall of Fame.

    The Cleveland institution needs to get bodies into its I.M. Pei-designed museum building. For years now, it’s been trying to do so by opening its doors to all forms of pop music and aiming to bring in still active artists who command at least a partially youngish fan base.

    In that sense Pink (who stylizes her stage name as P!nk) is a perfect fit. She may have a quarter century of experience, but her persona is anything but old school and staid. Her trademark trick is to fly through the air in an aerial harness high above the crowds at her shows. If it’s vitality the Rock Hall is after, Pink could be its artist of choice.

    Does that mean she’s going to get in? Not necessarily. Billboard has her odds at 8 to 1, tied with New Edition as the least likely of long shots.

    There’s plenty of competition. Hill, for one. The Fugees is not in as a group, so Hill would be the first member to represent the hip-hop crew, which was a commercial and critically dominant force in the late 1990s and early 2000s. Hill is also freshly prominent this year, after impressing as the leader of the Roberta Flack-D’Angelo tribute at the Grammys this month.

    She is nominated despite having only one solo album to her name, albeit an acknowledged classic that Apple Music rated the best of all time in 2024.

    The other artist on the list who put out only one album is Jeff Buckley, the songwriter with a sensuous voice who drowned in the Mississippi River at 30 in 1997. His 1994 Grace includes the definitive take on Leonard Cohen’s “Hallelujah,” and his story has renewed interest, thanks to Amy Berg’s 2025 doc, It’s Never Over, Jeff Buckley.

    Phil Collins is a lock. The British drummer and singer — who took a Concord to Philadelphia in 1985 so he could play at Live Aid on two continents — is already in with his band Genesis. But he has also had a massively successful solo career. His health struggles, which require 24-hour care, have been widely publicized.

    I’d also rate Wu-Tang Clan as a safe bet. The Rock Hall has tended to enshrine one big-name hip-hop act every year recently, with OutKast as last year’s example. And Wu-Tang, after all, is for the children and has a perfect combo of prestige and popularity.

    Every year, the Rock Hall snubs many unfashionable musical greats by not including them among the nominees. The incomparable Chicano band Los Lobos is my favorite example of a group that has been unjustly ignored.

    That doesn’t mean they’ll never get in, though: Last year, long-suffering fans of the late Warren Zevon were rewarded when he was honored as a Musical Influence.

    Other favorites among this year’s nominees include Iron Maiden, the English band whose inclusion would address the Rock Hall’s woeful record in acknowledging the history of heavy metal.

    Colombian singer Shakira — whose 2006 “Hips Don’t Lie” is the first song by a South American artist to top the Billboard pop charts — also has an excellent shot, with the Rock Hall being mindful of paying attention to more Latin pop in the age of Bad Bunny.

    Singer-songwriter Jeff Buckley, who found fame from his lone solo album “Grace,” is the subject of the music documentary “It’s Never Over, Jeff Buckley.”

    And Oasis — whose reunited Gallagher brothers mounted an enormously successful world tour in 2025 — would certainly be a popular choice, with the induction ceremony a rare chance to bring the famously squabbling siblings together to celebrate one of the few things they can agree on: their greatness.

    Last year, only six of the nominated performers got in. Previous nominees like Carey might also have an edge on Pink, who is likely to get in eventually, if not this year.

    This year’s induction ceremony will be held in the fall, though where and exactly when has not yet been announced. Inductees are chosen by over 1,200 artists, historians, and music business professionals, according to a statement.

    Fans can vote for their favorite seven choices at RockHall.com, but those votes have little impact. The RRHOF condenses the total of all fan voting to just one ballot to add to over 1,200 others.

    This is the South Jersey edition of the free Homegrown Live concert series presented by WXPN-FM (88.5). The three-act bill is topped by Linwood quartet Fat Mezz, who blends classic rock influences with a touch of jazz. The band’s name was inspired by late clarinet player and civil rights advocate Milton Mezzrow. Nicoletta Giuliani fronts Ocean City’s Polaroid Fade, whose beguiling full-length debut, Chaos Into Poetry, displays an affection for jangly 1990s bands like the Smiths and Sundays.     Mavis Staples

    Mavis Staples’ place in music history has long been secure. Her family band, the Staple Singers, marched with the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther Ling Jr. during the Civil Rights Movement in the 1950s and 1960s, and her powerful vocals anchored counterculture-era hits like “Respect Yourself” and “I’ll Take You There.”

    But the 86-year-old national treasure’s creative output has continued and even increased in recent years with the Chicagoan recording a series of albums with Jeff Tweedy and Ben Harper. Her newest is the soulful and deeply moving collection Sad and Beautiful World, which was produced by Brad Cook and includes covers of Frank Ocean, Tom Waits, Leonard Cohen, and Curtis Mayfield.

    The title cut is by Mark Linkous of Sparklehorse. Another new song, “Human Mind,” is written by Allison Russell and Hozier. Massachusetts singer-guitarist Kimaya Diggs opens. 8 p.m., Colonial Theatre, 227 Bridge St., Phoenixville, ColonialTheatre.com

    The Ike Reilly Assassination

    Pugnacious rock and roll troubadour and Sirius/XM satellite radio host Ike Reilly has released 12 albums since his 2001 debut, Salesmen and Racists. He’s also the star of the documentary Don’t Turn Your Back on Friday Night, which was produced by Tom Morello, whom he shared a bill with last month at the anti-ICE benefit show in Minneapolis. It’s the same where Morello brought onstage Bruce Springsteen, who has added Morello to the E Street Band for his upcoming tour.     The Milan Cortina Olympics averaged 23.5 million viewers in the United States, making them the most-watched Winter Games since 2014 with a 96% larger audience than the Beijing Games four years ago.

    NBCUniversal said the average includes combined audiences on NBC, Peacock, CNBC, USA Network and other digital platforms. It covered the live afternoon (2-5 p.m. EST) and prime-time (8-11 p.m. EST/PST) windows.

    The figures are based on Nielsen’s Big Data + Panel ratings (through Feb. 19), Nielsen’s early figures for the final three days (Feb. 20-22) and digital data from Adobe Analytics.

    Viewership numbers for the United States’ 2-1 overtime victory over Canada in men’s hockey on Sunday morning were not expected until Tuesday. The Canadian Broadcasting Corporation said on Monday that 8.7 million were watching in Canada when Jack Hughes scored the golden goal in overtime. The celebration that followed included American players carrying the jersey (and eventually the children) of late South Jersey hockey star Johnny Gaudreau, who was killed along with his brother by an alleged drunk driver while biking near their family home in Salem County.

    “I feel in so many ways that these Winter Olympics exceeded our expectations. We were reminded that the Olympics are the most exciting, unpredictable and biggest stage in sports,” said Molly Solomon, the executive producer of NBC’s Olympics coverage. “And what I think came together in Italy was that the settings were stunningly beautiful, the access we had to the athletes and their lives was unprecedented. And then you take the technology, the first-person view drones, the audio, and it took the audience inside the stories in fresh, meaningful ways.

    “And Team USA, I mean, the results, you’ve seen the numbers for the medals and things. America wants to see how their team’s performing, and it’s the best performance in an overseas Olympics. Everything lived up to the billing, and some of the superstars had riveting, dramatic performances. Not all of them gold, but that’s the Olympics, right?”

    NBC broadcast the Super Bowl, the Olympics, and the NBA All-Star Game in February, the first time a network had all three in one month. It also premiered “Sunday Night Basketball” on Feb. 1.

    According to Nielsen, 215.6 million U.S. viewers tuned in for at least one of those events. Audience reach numbers have been higher under Nielsen’s new rating system since the minimum viewing requirement was reduced from 5 to 3 minutes.

    Super Bowl 60 averaged 125.6 million viewers across NBC, Peacock, and Telemundo, the second-most-watched program in U.S. history. The All-Star Game had its highest audience in 15 years, averaging 8.8 million, and the Lakers-Knicks game on Feb. 1 averaged 4.5 million.

    “I have to say it’s probably better than we expected. This doesn’t happen through luck or happenstance. This happens through just really good planning and then execution across the month. So really happy overall and I don’t think it could have gone better, honestly,” NBC Sports President Rick Cordella said.

    ‘Riverbend,’ the lost 1989 film that was brought back to life in Norristown

    In the 1990s, before Michael Dennis was a filmmaker, screening host, or archivist, he worked at the Video Library, the fabled video store in Mount Airy. He remembers the 1989 film Riverbend being on the shelves, but he had never watched it.

    Dennis, who founded the Philadelphia-based production company Reelblack in 1999, finally got around to watching the film in 2019. Charles Woods, Dennis’ mentor and podcast cohost, had asked him to transfer a VHS copy of the film to digital. He wanted to post the film on Reelblack TV’s YouTube channel.

    Riverbend, directed by Sam Firstenberg, is set in 1966 and tells the story of a group of Black Vietnam veterans who lead an uprising against a racist sheriff in a small Southern town. It’s an action-adventure film, in the tradition of the Rambo and Missing in Action series, firmly rooted in the B-movie style of the late 1980s — complete with a synthesizer-heavy musical score — but with much more of a social message than was typical of that time.

    The film had only a perfunctory theatrical release and was released on VHS in 1990. In its brief run, the film opened only in New York, Texas, and Florida. But now, it has gotten an unlikely revival in Philadelphia, a city where it was never shown.

    “The film itself is very revolutionary in some respects,” Dennis said. “I mean, it’s a genre picture, of course, but the theme is very revolutionary … and I was interested to talk to Sam about how the movie actually got made because it’s so different from most American films, nearly all American films.”

    A few months after he posted the film on YouTube, Dennis received an email from Firstenberg, a B-movie stalwart whose credits also include American Ninja, American Samurai, and Breakin’ 2: Electric Boogaloo.

    “I thought it was going to be a cease-and-desist letter, but instead he said, ‘No, you’re doing this movie a great service because it’s an orphan film and it was financed independently, and it’s basically lost,’” said Dennis, who teaches a course on race and ethnicity in American Cinema in Temple’s Film and Media Arts Department.

    During the COVID-19 lockdown, Dennis saw a 35 mm print of Riverbend being sold on eBay by a seller in South Africa. He put in a winning bid for the print that’d take months to reach him.

    Dennis considers himself an archivist, although he hadn’t previously mounted a full-scale restoration of a film before. But in keeping with Reelblack’s long-stated mission of encouraging the appreciation of Black film, especially rarer ones, he sought to restore Riverbend.

    The eBay print, he said, had “every scratch known to mankind on it.” It was also missing seven minutes of material. Replacing the missing scenes with materials from the VHS, calling it a “sort of grindhouse cut,” Dennis gave the film its first public screening in decades at the Denton Black Film Festival in Texas in 2024. There, he met Valerie Vance, the widow of the film’s screenwriter and producer, Sam Vance.

    “We were trying to find out where [Riverbend’s] negative was,” Dennis said, “And we had no luck because all the labs had closed and have become different companies.”

    He got in touch with Dennis Doros, who runs the Missing Movies Instagram account and Milestone Films, a company known for rescuing “lost films.” Within days, the film assets were located at the film lab FotoKem, with Amazon/MGM paying the bills to host it.

    Missing Movies, Vance, and Realblack worked out a deal to acquire the film’s negative and other assets.

    The film then traveled to Norristown, where it was restored at Reel Revival, a company that provides scanning services. Austin Squitieri, its proprietor, started by scanning and digitizing the Riverbend negative. What followed was a painstaking process of digital repair, which included dirt removal, some Photoshopping, and final assembly of the edited footage.

    Squitieri had not seen the film before working on the restoration, although he had heard of it.

    “It’s a fun title,” he said. “It tackles something serious, and you can tell it was made passionately, as some of the more niche films tend to be.”

    After premiering at the American Cinematheque Aero Theater in Los Angeles last October, the restored version of Riverbend is now headed to Philadelphia. The film will screen at Film Society East on Thursday and will be released on Blu-ray on June 27, through a new label called Reelblack Renaissance.

    “There’s so many great Black independent films that are in danger of being lost or forgotten,” Dennis said. Reelblack Renaissance’s mission is “to restore them, reclaim them, and represent them in the Blu-ray and streaming market.”

    Firstenberg, 76, will be on hand for the Philadelphia premiere.

    “He tours the country supporting his body of work. And, this is like rescuing a lost child for him,” Dennis said.

    Inside a large exhibition room at the Pennsylvania Convention Center on Monday morning, where workers are setting up next week’s Philadelphia Flower Show, one could be fooled into believing that spring has somehow arrived early in Philly.

    The scent of mulch permeates every corner, tendrils of pink and red flowers are delicately laid over massive tree trunks, a mobile hanging from the ceiling dangles dozens of iridescent butterfly cutouts over the floor, and bright green shrubbery dots the halls.

    It seems as if Punxsutawney Phil maybe got it wrong this time.

    But one thing gives it away: the gaping open loading dock door ushering in a channel of 35-degree air that slices through the center of the exhibition hall. Clusters of snowflakes billow in toward a mint-colored wooden fence and a tree house.

    For the organizers of the Philadelphia Flower Show, an annual week and a half-long event that features dozens of horticultural exhibits, the 14-inch snow dump over the weekend was less than ideal, said Seth Pearsoll, the show’s creative director and vice president with the Pennsylvania Horticultural Society. But it wasn’t a surprise.

    “We have been watching the weather for weeks on end,” Pearsoll said. “You just got to stay on top of it.”

    The show, which opens to the general public on Saturday —the Horticultural Society members preview is Friday — and ends March 8, is typically held in the late winter/early spring. That’s led to some historically dicey weather.

    A 1993 blizzard forced the show to close early. Meteorologists predicted huge snowfalls in 2001 and 2013 as well. And, in 2018, a nor’easter hit the city on the opening night of the show. When the show was held outside during the years of the COVID-19 pandemic, it was shuttered or postponed for short stretches because of inclement weather.

    Despite the weather challenges the show, which has been running for nearly 200 years, is typically held at this time of year partly due to tradition. The show dates to an era long before the internet when the event was designed to present the season’s products to florists, landscapers, farmers, and others in the horticultural industry so they could place their orders in time for spring planting.

    “After that it was just part of the DNA of the show,” Pearsoll said.

    The show brings in a quarter million visitors each year, he said, and requires meticulous planning and constant pivoting.

    The original schedule for Monday included a 7 a.m. load-in time, he said, but his team later pushed that to noon to ensure that all the trucks could get to the facility safely. Many of the plant deliveries for Monday were moved to Tuesday or Wednesday, by which time the team hopes roads will be clearer.

    Trucks won’t just be contending with the weather in Philly but across the country as the event is getting shipments in from Minnesota, Florida, and New York, among other states.

    Most of the plants themselves are protected in climate-controlled trucks.

    “I think, for me, having been a part of outdoor shows, having worked a million flower shows, weather is always a thing,” Pearsoll said. “So I’ve really come to see it as just another one of those planning variables in the event industry.”

    The way he views it, the snowy, slushy, frigid weather outside enhances the magic of walking through rows of plants that have, through “sorcery,” as he calls it, been manipulated into blooming out of season.

    “It’s this crazy thing, right?” he said. “It mean it’s science. It’s art.”

    The Philadelphia Flower show is scheduled for Saturday through March 8 (with a Horticultural Society members preview on Friday) at the Pennsylvania Convention Center, 11th and Arch Streets.     A former Chester County detective — who served as a technical adviser for the HBO crime drama Mare of Easttown — is suing her former employer and supervisor in federal court over alleged sex discrimination.

    Christine Bleiler, who became Kate Winslet’s “go-to person” on developing her Emmy-winning performance as titular character Mare Sheehan, says she was subjected to a “prolonged pattern of hostile, discriminatory, and demeaning treatment based on her sex,” according to a complaint filed this month in the Eastern District of Pennsylvania.

    And though an internal investigation “corroborated” that she was being harassed, according to the suit, the county failed to remedy the harassment to which she was subjected.

    In addition to Chester County, the lawsuit names as a defendant Thomas Goggin, who was Bleiler’s supervisor from 2021 to 2023. Bleiler resigned in September.

    A spokesperson for the county declined to comment on ongoing litigation. An attorney for Goggin, who now serves as police chief in West Pikeland Township, did not immediately respond to a message seeking comment.

    Bleiler, who worked as a police officer for nearly a dozen years in Oxford Borough before beginning as a Chester County detective in 2015, began working under Goggin in February 2021. He accused her of talking too much, yelled at her repeatedly over how she handled suspects or on differences in opinion, demeaned and condescended to her, and told her “she ‘better not’ tell anyone that he was a problem,” according to the complaint.

    In August 2023, Bleiler brought the complaints to the detective division’s leadership, prompting an internal investigation that ultimately corroborated her claims, the suit says. Goggin was suspended for two weeks and was demoted, according to the complaint.

    Bleiler was worried about working near Goggin once he returned from his suspension, the suit says, fearing that he might retaliate. She was instructed by the department’s leadership to “bury her head in her work” and “move on from this.” Though she began reporting to a new supervisor, working in proximity to Goggin “caused her significant discomfort, anxiety and distress over potential retaliation and continued harassment,” the complaint says.

    Bleiler is asking a judge to declare that the county and Goggin’s actions violated federal and state antidiscrimination laws. It asks the court to grant her compensation for past and future lost earnings, earning capacity, and benefits, which the complaint argues Bleiler lost due to the “discriminatory and retaliatory conduct.”

    “The conduct of defendants, as set forth above, was severe or pervasive enough to make a reasonable person believe that the conditions of employment had been altered and that the working environment was hostile or abusive, and in fact made plaintiff believe that her working environment was hostile and abusive because of her sex and her complaint of sex discrimination,” the complaint states.

    While a detective for the county, in 2019 Bleiler served as a technical adviser for HBO’s Mare of Easttown, taking phone calls from Winslet morning and night to discuss upcoming scenes or to answer questions. At one point, Winslet visited her at the Justice Center in West Chester.

    “She insisted,” Bleiler told The Inquirer in 2021. “I told my lieutenant at that time, he couldn’t believe it. He said, ‘All right, she’s your responsibility. Get her in and get her out, keep it quiet.’”

    It’s clear that the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s nonviolence movement benefited from Clarence B. Jones’ North Philly swag.

    Jones’ gravelly voice narrates The Baddest Speechwriter of All, Steph Curry and Academy Award-winning director Ben Proudfoot’s 30-minute documentary, which won the Sundance Film Festival’s Grand Jury Prize for short films this year.

    It rises and falls to the crescendo of the film’s emotional jazz riffs, matching the gravity of the civil rights struggle.

    Proudfoot drops a cadre of never-before-seen black-and-white images of lawyer Jones’ backing King up, a display of Jones’ behind-the-scenes prowess. He was a speech writer and close friend of King’s.

    But it’s the directors’ deft use of watercolor animations by Brazilian artist Daniel Bruson’s (Autism Goes to College) that brings a tenderness to Jones’ sometimes cynical, always cut-to-the-chase personality.

    You see, Jones is that cat who, back in the day, stayed casket clean in sharp three-piece suits and sparkling Rolex watches. He’s that uncle who dared white men to tell him that he didn’t belong; that educated Black man who didn’t have time for racism. And it’s for that reason, King kept him in the background, but also in his ear.

    “I told Martin straight up,” Jones says in Baddest, answering Curry, who is making his directorial debut with the film. “Don’t put me near any demonstration. … If a white man puts his hands on me, they are going down.”

    Three thousand watercolor images move seamlessly through Baddest narrating Jones’ life in a slow, jazzy rhythm. We watch him develop civil rights strategies with King and a coalition of like-minded Jewish people.

    We are with Jones the night he matter-of-factly writes the first seven paragraphs of King’s “I Have a Dream” speech, arguably one of the world’s most important addresses. We watch King give the speech as Jones looks from the wings, surprised and in awe.

    “I didn’t know he was going to read my words word-for-word,” Jones, 95, told The Inquirer in a recent video chat.

    He closes his eyes often as he talks, punctuating his speech every so often with a well-placed, “You hear me?” or “You understand me?”

    His hair is a short white Afro. Soft and defiant.

    A wintertime soldier from North Philly

    Jones was the only child of domestic workers, born in the 1300 block of Master Street, where Temple University’s sports complex stands today. Shortly after, his parents found work as live-in help at the Riverton, Burlington County, country estate of Edgar and Eleanora Lippincott, a Quaker family and part owners of a prosperous 19th-century Philadelphia-based clothing firm.

    “I lived there [with the Lippincotts] until they sent me to a Catholic boarding school [the Sisters of the Blessed Sacrament],” Jones said. “I was raised by Catholic nuns who told me, ‘Master Jones, you are a good boy, Jesus loves you. You are beautiful.’”

    The positive reinforcement turned Jones into a force, at a time when Black people’s education and career options were limited by racism. He finished Palmyra High School in New Jersey, the current home of the Clarence B. Jones Institute of Social Advocacy, at the top of his class. He attended the summer program at the Juilliard School in Manhattan for two years and studied clarinet. There he fine-tuned the musical ear that, he said, aided him in writing King’s speeches.

    He graduated from Columbia University, did a brief stint in the Army, and graduated from Boston University Law School. By the late 1950s, he was working as an entertainment lawyer for Revue Studios, which was absorbed into what is now Universal.

    Jones was at home one evening in 1960 when his mentor and former New York judge Hubert T. Delany asked him to defend King, then a young preacher and budding Civil Rights Movement leader, against a tax evasion charge in Montgomery, Ala.

    Jones said no.

    “I wondered whether he [King] was real,” Jones said. “‘Cause I’m saying he [King] comes from a middle-class Black family. He didn’t have to do this. I come from the kitchen.”

    Yet, he agreed after hearing King preach at a church in neighboring Baldwin Hills. Jones was struck by his sermon imploring educated Black people not to turn their backs on the struggle.

    He joined the team of attorneys who successfully persuaded an Alabama jury to acquit King of tax evasion and perjuryand stayed on as his personal attorney.

    In 1963, King was jailed again. This time in for leading demonstrations, marches, and sit-ins against racial segregation in Birmingham, Ala. Jones smuggled out notes that King wrote to his fellow clergymen while incarcerated and compiled the missives into King’s “Letter from a Birmingham Jail.”

    That same year Jones worked with singer Harry Belafonte to secure $100,000 from the Rockefellers to bail Birmingham protesters out of jail. The Rockefellers asked him to sign a promissory note, that they later tore up. Jones references that promissory note in his draft of King’s speech.

    “I was sharing a room with King in Albany, Ga.,” Jones told The Inquirer. “And he said, ‘Anybody can walk with me in the warm sunlight of an August summer. But only a wintertime soldier walks with me at midnight in the alpine chill of winter. You, Clarence, are my wintertime soldier.’”

    How ‘Baddest’ came to be

    Proudfoot and Curry met through a mutual friend in the late 2010s. A few years later, Curry helped produce Proudfoot’s 2022 Oscar-winning documentary The Queen of Basketball, the story of women’s basketball pioneer Lusia Harris.

    Curry met Jones in 2022 when Golden State Warriors coach Steve Kerr invited Jones to speak to the team. Curry was intrigued with the elder statesmen’s stories and asked Proudfoot if he would be interested in working on a documentary about Jones’ life.

    “As a storyteller, I’m always interested in approaching well-known pieces of history through a fresh perspective,” said Proudfoot, a 35-year-old Nova Scotia native and two-time Academy Award winner. (Proudfoot’s credits also include the 2024 Netflix documentary The Turn Around, about Phillies superfan John McCann.)

    “Clarence wasn’t just sitting there waiting for Dr. King to call him,” Proudfoot said. “He was a reluctant participant. He made a decision to live in comfort or live with purpose.”

    Between Curry’s busy NBA schedule and detailed animation, it took three years to complete Baddest. In February, Netflix announced that the film will premiere on its streaming platform this year.

    A ‘bad man’

    Jones was King’s attorney until his assassination in 1968. In the late 1960s he became a partner at what is now Cogan, Berlind, Weill & Levitt, making him the first African American partner at a Wall Street investment banking firm. During that time he also became the first Black person to become an allied member of the New York Stock Exchange.

    During the 1970s, Jones served as the chairman of the New York-based Inner City Broadcasting, where he and Percy Sutton — once Malcolm X’s attorney — founded New York’s WBLS, the blueprint for today’s R&B radio stations. There, he also had a hand in developing the long-running variety show, . From 1971 to 1974, Jones was editor and publisher of the New York Amsterdam News.

    “I’m telling you,” Jones said as a sly grin crawled across his face. “I was a bad man.”

    In recent years, Jones has enjoyed a renewed spotlight.

    He was featured in a 2024 Super Bowl commercial paid for by the Foundation to Combat Antisemitism. “I’d remind people that all hate thrives on one thing, silence,” he says, urging viewers to stand up to Jewish hate. President Joe Biden awarded him the Presidential Medal of Freedom — the highest civilian honor — in May that same year.

    Just days after the death of the Rev. Jesse Jackson, Jones remembered Jackson as a leader in the civil rights struggle. “I looked upon Jesse Jackson as someone who was a warrior in the battle who has fallen,” Jones said. “I regard him with great love and affection.”

    At a time when the historical civil rights language Jones had a hand in drafting is seen by this presidential administration as racist toward white Americans, Jones is reflective.

    If people would focus more on love, perhaps America would be a better place.

    “King’s work was about love,” he said. “The love he had for his work, for his people … the love he had for me.”

    America’s oldest flower show, which began in 1829, the internationally renowned event draws thousands to Center City each year, and represents the Horticultural Society’s biggest fundraiser, supporting its greening efforts across the city.

    How to have a Perfect Philly Day, according to Revolution Museum chief R. Scott Stephenson

    For R. Scott Stephenson, the ghosts of the Revolution are easily conjured. They are found on every block and every corner of his daily walk from his 18th-century home in Queen Village to the Museum of the American Revolution in Old City, where Stephenson has served as president and CEO since 2018.

    “If you close your eyes, you can feel it,” Stephenson wrote about “The Declaration’s Journey,” the museum’s ongoing grand exhibit celebrating America’s 250th anniversary. “Over there, irascible John Adams and taciturn George Washington stroll to their first meeting. Down the street, brooding Thomas Jefferson takes a break from drafting a declaration to stretch his legs and find a nice pint of cider.”

    R. Scott Stephenson has been president and CEO of the Museum of the American Revolution since 2018. This year, as the nation turns 250, the museum takes center stage.

    As Philadelphia takes center stage in 2026 for the national milestone, also known as the Semiquincentennial, Stephenson will no doubt have a little less time to stretch his legs. This year, it falls to him to conjure the spirits of those fiery days of rebellion for the more than 1.5 million visitors Philadelphia is expecting in 2026.

    It is a moment of celebration and introspection the museum has been planning for since before it opened in 2017. With the lauded exhibit exploring the history and global impact of the declaration, and their most robust slate of programming and exhibitions ever, the museum and its staff of about 100 historians and researchers, is ready, said Stephenson.

    “It’s akin to a playwright,” he said. “You’ve written the play, you’ve cast all the characters, you’ve made all the costumes, you built the stage and been through endless rehearsals. We feel so supremely confident to meet the visitors that are coming.”

    A Pittsburgh native, who earned a PhD in American History at the University of Virginia, Stephenson and his wife, a physician, and two adult children, have lived in the Philly area for 25 years. His perfect Philly day would include coffee before dawn, Italian Market shopping and exploring with his daughter, oysters and bookstores, Philly’s only Colonial-era tavern, and a home-cooked meal with the family. And all, with those ghosts trailing close behind.

    Stephenson, 60, a Pittsburgh native, lives in Queen Village with his wife and daughter.

    This interview has been condensed and edited for length.

    5:30 a.m.

    Our beloved adopted Philadelphian, Benjamin Franklin, said, “Early to bed, early to rise makes a man healthy, wealthy and wise.” So far, I’m just healthy, the other two may have not necessarily come (laughter). But I think maybe with the thousands of years of farmers in my past, my circadian clock has never changed. I am up without an alarm between 4:30 a.m. and 5:30 a.m. I start my day with a pot of really strong black coffee. Those first couple of hours before anyone is up is golden time for me. I read my periodicals, my newspapers. I still like the sound of paper wrinkling.

    7:30 a.m.

    We are a cooking family. On weekends, we are all about ending the day with a big meal that we make together. So a perfect day is my daughter and I walking to the Italian Market to browse around at the various shops, figuring out what protein we’re going to build dinner around. And nosing around the produce stands and cheese stops. At Fante’s Kitchen Shop are great reproductions of 18th-century German cookie molds for making gingerbreads.

    I do not have one path to get from Point A to Point B anywhere in Philadelphia, so I’m usually going to want to zigzag around a bit. We like to do a little exploration as we bring the groceries back to the house.

    11:30 a.m.

    My wife and I love to walk over to Rittenhouse. Lunch at the Oyster House. I love that block of Sansom. It’s a street that feels like a previous era. There’s an original oyster house in Pittsburgh. That was a place both of my grandfathers ate lunch often. My father would go there. I was taken there as a kid. Although ironically, I have a great grandfather who died from eating, what was called on his death certificate, a “poisoned oyster.” He ate a bad one and died in 1905 when he ate a bad one that was a little too far from the Jersey Shore when it was consumed.

    1 p.m.

    I’d definitely pop into Sherman Brothers Shoes right next door. Incredible shoe store. I am sort of obsessed with Alden shoes, these great, super sturdy, American made, old school leather shoes. So I am at least going to go drool a little bit, and think, “Oh, when I wear this pair out, what’s my next pair of Alden’s going to be?”

    2 p.m.

    On a perfect day, I’m popping into the museum, and trying to remain anonymous. Just for an hour, and go wander around the galleries or sit through a showing of “Washington’s Tent” — and just talk to guests. A lot of my job is storytelling. Being able to talk about the impact we have on people — the best way to do that is to actually tell a story that happened to me.

    3 p.m.

    Our other routine would be to go to Plough & the Stars in Old City. We absolutely love Plough & the Stars, particularly in the winter, to be able to sit in front of the fire there. Have a shephard’s pie or fish and chips and a Guinness.

    4:30 p.m.

    I’m gonna spend some time up at the Book Trader on Second Street. I’m not actually allowed to buy any more books. My library is mostly in storage right now. We just don’t have the room. But I do love a bookstore, particularly a used one.

    Stephenson said of Man Full of Trouble tavern and museum: “That’s the only surviving tavern in Philadelphia from the 18th century, where you can literally sit in a room where rum punch and revolution was the game.”

    5:30 p.m.

    Walking home, and frankly whether or not I have been to Center City or Old City, I am almost certainly going to stop, and this a new addition since it just reopened, but at the Man Full of Trouble tavern and history museum. That’s the only surviving tavern in Philadelphia from the 18th century, where you can literally sit in a room where rum punch and revolution was the game. To me, it’s just another reason why this is the greatest city in the nation. Being a few blocks from the Man Full of Trouble, creates a lot of trouble (laughter).

    6:30 p.m.

    It’s probably time to start dealing with those groceries at this point (laughter). At least one weekend day every weekend is family dinner day, where we’re all going to be cooking. So my son and his girlfriend will be in — my daughter’s there, my wife’s there, and we’ll have figured out what’s on the menu. We have a long table. We love to have candles and a candlestick on the table, and turn the lights down. A no device moment, where we really are in each other’s presence.

    8 p.m.

    We are probably going to be playing Wingspan, it’s a board game. There’s a new one called Finspan, which is all about fish in the ocean. We are almost exactly a two minute walk from Queen & Rook Game Cafe. So we’re kind of in a board game neighborhood. We’ll be right at our dining room table and we’ll be playing for a while and drinking a little wine.

    9 p.m.

    Going back to Franklin for a minute, and you remember his aphorism was “Early to bed, early to rise.” I am not the life of a party. Most nights by 9 p.m., my eyes are closed and I am sawing wood (laughter).

    There are two architects of Philadelphia’s chicken-bone temple. One has whiskers. The other has hands.

    Curious Philly asked why there were so many chicken bones on the streets of our city. Turns out it’s a whole circle of life testament to gross urban living. Rats rip into trash bags, raccoons drag leftovers into the street, and yes, sometimes humans just … drop them.

    Somewhere in Philly, a squirrel is dragging a drumstick across a crosswalk like it just led the Mummers Parade down Broad. A raccoon is performing minor surgery on a Hefty bag. And a rat is simply responding to the opportunity. Philadelphia is the eighth-rattiest city in America (which feels relevant here), and twice-weekly trash pickup means an extra day of opportunity. A ripped bag on the curb is an open invitation.

    Meanwhile, dog owners are performing full-contact tug-of-war in the middle of the Gayborhood because their shih tzu refuses to give up a chicken bone that is just as likely to choke them to death.

    So please, put a tight lid on the trash cans. Until then, the sidewalk wing night continues.

    Michael Vick Reparation Park: A

    It took 800 episodes for The Simpsons to finally visit Philadelphia.

    They covered the obvious beats. Rocky, Wawa, cheesesteaks, the whole “wooder” universe. That’s low-hanging fruit.

    But tucked into the background of the episode was a joke that wasn’t obvious, wasn’t tourist-friendly, and absolutely wasn’t generic: a fictional dog park called Michael Vick Reparation Park, “the best dog park in the world.” That’s a deep-cut, morally messy, and very-Philly sports memory.

    Vick arrived here after serving prison time for running a dogfighting ring. His signing split the fan base and forced years of uncomfortable conversations about redemption, talent, and how much winning smooths things over. He rebuilt his career in Eagles green. Some fans forgave, while others never did. The tension is the punchline.

    It works because it’s The Simpsons. And it lands because this episode wasn’t written by someone skimming Wikipedia. It was written by Christine Nangle, Oxford Circle-raised, Penn-educated, and still passionately Philly. You don’t make that joke unless you remember how complicated that era was.

    The episode even found space to include a nod to the late Dan McQuade in the Roots concert scene. Blink and you’d miss it, but it’s a tribute that meant something if you knew.

    So the moral of the story is anyone can animate the Liberty Bell. It takes a local to slip in a joke that sharp and trust the audience to understand it.

    Bruce Springsteen is coming back to Philadelphia in May. May!

    As in, windows-open, water-ice-in-hand, skyline-glowing, baseball-season May.

    And instead of Citizens Bank Park, where he played two summers ago under actual sky, the “Land of Hope and Dreams” tour is landing at Xfinity Mobile Arena.

    Indoors.

    This is not anti-arena slander, but May in Philadelphia is outdoor concert weather. It’s built for a ballpark.

    The tour includes 19 arena dates and one baseball stadium finale in Washington. Which makes it feel even more criminal that Philly — a city that will scream every word to “Born to Run” — is getting the indoor version.

    (We’ll still go, obviously.)

    Pothole season officially begins: F

    The snow is melting, which means two things in Philadelphia. People are wearing shorts in 42 degrees and the roads are about to betray us.

    As the ice pulls back, the damage reveals itself. Broad Street suddenly looks like it survived a minor asteroid shower. A harmless bump from January is now a cavity. That thin crack you ignored all winter? Now you slow down for it instinctively.

    You can tell the season has arrived by the driving alone. Traffic doesn’t flow in straight lines anymore, it zigzags. Group texts start circulating with hyper-specific intersection warnings. A single traffic cone materializes in the middle of the street and quietly becomes semi-permanent infrastructure.

    Some craters get patched fast. Others linger long enough to earn neighborhood lore. “Turn left at the one that swallowed the Camry.”

    Citizens Bank Park without Sam the Popcorn Girl: F

    The Phillies will still play. The popcorn will still be sold.

    But one of the ballpark’s most recognizable faces won’t be in the aisles for most of the season.

    Sam the Popcorn Girl is a minor celebrity at Citizen’s Bank Park, balancing popcorn on her head, popping up on Phanavision, and playfully sparring with Mets fans.

    Over the last decade, she’s become an essential part of the atmosphere at the ballpark. Sure, she’s not on the roster, but she was part of the team. And this summer, she’ll be working on a Carnival cruise ship instead.

    It’s temporary, and she promises she’ll be back. But this is Philadelphia. We’ve seen how this goes. First it’s a cruise contract. Next thing you know, the bullpen collapses in June.

    Remove one of the ballpark’s regulars and suddenly everything feels off, and it’s way too early to be testing the baseball gods.

    Booking the Shore before the snow melts: A-

    There are still snowbanks clinging to street corners in Philadelphia.

    And yet Margate agents are fielding multiple rental calls before lunchtime.

    Fourteen weeks from Memorial Day, the Jersey Shore scramble is already underway. Not casually. Urgently.

    Last year, people waited, booking shorter stays and trying to read the market. This year, they’re locking in weeks while there’s still salt on the sidewalk.

    The Shore has always been a seasonal reset button. But booking it in February (before anyone has even vacuumed the sand out of last year’s trunk) feels like a quiet shift.

    After a few summers of sticker shock, people are now less afraid of being priced out then they are of being too late.

    Soon we’ll be arguing over beach tags and debating Avalon vs. Sea Isle. Soon someone will be panic-buying Wawa hoagies on the Parkway.

    We thought it was still winter. But summer, apparently, starts when the snow is still melting.
